Area Information

Conveniently located between Orlando and Tampa, Lakeland is a charming city known for its abundant lakes and southern hospitality. Over 100 golf courses, major attractions, historical destinations and sports teams call Lakeland home. The art and cultural scene thrive in the quaint city and visitors love it so much some of them make their trip permanent.

Leisure Activities/Sports

  • There are hundreds of freshwater lakes throughout Lakeland and Polk County for your water sports and fishing enjoyment. World class Bass fishing tournaments are held here each year.
  • Lake Hollingsworth is the site for the annual Orange Cup Regatta Hydroplane races and is referred to as the "Lake of Records" due to the number of world records set there.
  • The Golf Club at BridgeWater is Lakeland’s newest semi-private golf course. The Steve Smyers designed, 18-hole course is open for play and BridgeWater residents have membership opportunities to The Golf Club.
  • For tennis, a number of superb facilities, complete with amenities and professional tennis instruction, are located throughout the region for both private and public play including the newly renovated Beerman Family Tennis Center located at Veterans Park off Edgewood Avenue.

Attractions

  • Explorations V Children's Museum will surprise your senses on a jet-stream journey of discovery through touchable exhibits featuring art, science, literature, math, health, life skills, and cultures from around the world.
  • The Imperial Symphony Orchestra hosts a full season of live symphonic performances each year.
  • The Polk Museum of Art is "More than an Art Museum" and offers a variety of activities for visitors of all ages.
  • Polk Theatre, one of the last remaining atmospheric theatres in the state, was originally built in 1927 as a vaudeville and movie house. Restored, it now has a renewed life as the ideal venue for performances, films and social gatherings.
  • The Florida Air Museum at Sun 'n Fun is Florida's official aviation museum and education center. On display you'll find a unique collection of aircraft and other aviation related memorabilia, including over 35 experimental and home- built aircrafts.
  • The Jenkins Arena at The Lakeland Center is the choice location for large concerts, meetings and indoor sports. The Jenkins Arena is home to the Lakeland Thunderbolts, Lakeland’s indoor arena football team.  Here you can also enjoy public ice skating during the winter season.

State Parks and Recreation

  • Lakeland maintains over 50 parks with an array of amenities including baseball, football, lakefront picnic areas, walking trails, an in-line skating rink, skate park, playgrounds, fishing, volleyball, and boat ramps.
  • The award-winning Hollis Garden located on historic Lake Mirror is a must see for everyone. The beautiful formal botanic garden showcases the latest plant species native, exotic, and common to Florida.
